Remove the fan drive belts. Refer to Procedure 008-002 in Section 8.

Loosen the idler pulley shaft lock nut.

Turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise to release tension, and remove the water pump belt.

Inspect the idler and the water pump pulleys for cracks or broken grooves.

Replace if necessary. Refer to Procedure 008-064 in Section 8.

Inspect and replace the belt for the following characteristics:

• Cracks
• Glazing
• Tears or cuts.

Inspect the pulley alignment. Pulley misalignment must not exceed 0.5 mm per cm [0.0625-inch per foot] of distance between the pulley centers.

Replace the idler pulley or the water pump if they are not in alignment.

Use the following procedure to replace the water pump idler pulley. Refer to Procedure 008-064 in Section 8.

Use the following procedure to replace the water pump. Refer to Procedure 008-062 in Section 8.

Install a new belt onto the pulleys.

Turn the adjusting screw to adjust belt tension.

NOTE: Belt tension can increase when the lock nut is tightened. Do not adjust belt tension to full value with the adjusting screw.

Use a belt tension gauge, Part Number ST-1293 (Burroughs) or 3822525 (Click-Type), to measure six-rib belt tension.

* A belt is considered used if it has been in operation for 10 minutes or longer.

* If used belt tension is below the minimum, tighten to the maximum value.

Tighten the idler pulley shaft lock nut.

Loosen the adjusting screw 1/2-turn to prevent breakage.

Measure the belt tension again. Adjust if necessary.
