NOTE: If the cylinder head gasket(s) is being replaced because of coolant, lubricating oil, or compression leaks, use the following procedure:

 
SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE

Define the type of leak as follows:



SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE
   

Remove the cylinder head(s). Refer to Procedure 002-004 in Section 2.

Clean and inspect the cylinder head and the cylinder block. Refer to Procedure 002-004 in Section 2.









SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE
   

Inspect the cylinder head(s) for surface damage, flatness, and dowel hole depth.

Inspect the cylinder block for surface damage and flatness.

Repair the damaged surface. Refer to the Alternative Repair Manual, Bulletin Number 3379035.

Check the cylinder liner protrusion. Refer to Procedure 001-028 in Section 1..

Inspect the gasket grommets for defects.





SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE
   

Install the new cylinder head gasket(s).





SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE
   

Install the cylinder head(s). Refer to Procedure 002-004 in Section 2.





SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE
   

Fill the cooling system. Refer to Procedure 008-018 in Section 8.

Fill the engine with clean 15W-40 lubricating oil if the cylinder liners were removed. Refer to Procedure 007-025 in Section 7.

Operate the engine until the coolant temperature is above 82°C [180°F], and check for leaks.
